There's Background Information Available on All Licensed New Jersey Doctors

By: Rosetta Key

As the full State Board of Medical Examiners meets Wednesday to ratify a decision to temporarily suspend the license of an Ocean County Doctor who's the prime suspect in a Hepatitis-B cluster investigation, how can you be sure that your doctor is safe?

It doesn't seem to be a perfect system but there is one way for you to find out who the problem-doctors are in New Jersey.

According to Jeff Lam of the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs, the State Board of Medical Examiners maintains a web site search able by physician's name for all 33-thousand doctors licensed to practice in New Jersey. He says, The web site address is "njdoctorlist.com" and on it you'll find information on any disciplinary actions going back ten years. There's information on medical malpractice awards, as well as information on schools that a physician attended and areas of expertise.

Lam says doctors aren't randomly inspected but they do have field investigators who'll go out and respond to complaints which are treated as allegations and the inspectors are basically finders of fact to see if there is any substance. Lam says complaints that are verified go back to the board for disciplinary action.

Lam says, "A lot of the cases that have come before the licensing board have resulted from consumer complaints."

The State Board of Medical Examiners Friday decided to temporarily suspend the license of Toms River Doctor Parvez Dara as an investigation into how five of his patients contracted Hepatitis-B. His attorney says they will appeal the decision.
